University of Melbourne – William Macmahon Ball Theatre

CHW Consulting worked closely with Architectus to deliver two distinct learning spaces for the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne. The William Macmahon Ball theatre is a unique forum style presentation space that has been specifically designed to blend presentation technology within the architectural facets. The theatre includes two large format flat panel displays, four projectors configured to project onto all four walls, provision for digital and analog source inputs, automated touch panel control, and the ability for students to share multimedia content from seated area. The acoustics within the room have also optimised to encourage discussion and collaboration. System design incorporated the design challenges associated with use of natural light and limited projection throw-distances.

The GSHSS collaborative space included two projectors and two large format flat panel displays connected via a complex digital matrix switch that allows the space to operate in presentation mode, group mode and student presentation modes. The system encourages students to BYOD (bring your own device) and share ideas whilst working in groups.
