Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) - IT & AV Advisory Services
The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) is the brand new $1 billion facility dedicated to cancer research, treatment, care and education. Located in Melbourne’s medical precinct Parkville, the VCCC comprises of a 13 storey building and two bridge links to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. It is the new home to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and provides cancer research, clinical services and education facilities for the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne. CHW served as the state technical advisors for this mammoth project. Over a period of 7 years, our team provided specialist advice and oversaw the delivery of Communications, Audio Visual, and Information Technology services.
The project was delivered as a public private partnership (PPP) with Plenary Health consortium acting as the private sector partner. CHW worked closely with all stakeholders including the Victorian Department of Health and Human Services, Peter MacCallum Centre, Melbourne Health and The University of Melbourne to ensure the end result was a world class, high tech facility.
Across the site, we developed a comprehensive ICT and AV strategy that would meet the centre’s various operational needs and improve patients’ experience. We were responsible for writing the technical brief for both AV and ICT and further oversaw the delivery of a number of different packages on behalf of the Victorian Government, including:
- AV services
- Integrated operating theatres (IOR)
- Digital signage and way-finding
- IPTV and Patient Entertainment System (PES)
- Nurse call system
- Content capture and Multimedia streaming
- Local Area Network (LAN)
- Wireless network (WLAN) and Real Time Location Services (RTLS)
- Data centre, server environment and Storage Area Network (SAN)
- Desktop and Thin Client
- Mobile Devices
- Network Security and Redundancy
- Wide Area Network (WAN)
- Backup and Archiving
- Virtual Desktop Infrastructure
- Single Sign On
- Video Conferencing
Key challenges included the integration of the facilities maintenance manager Honeywell and precinct partners; Peter Mac, Royal Melbourne Hospital and the University of Melbourne, into one converged network while still maintaining confidentiality between all parties. This required a strong understanding of the business requirements of all partners, consistent presence on site and high levels of coordination with the integrators.
Critically, with the facility’s operations and patient safety dependent on the integrity of the IT infrastructure, the network was carefully designed to mitigate the chances of a network outage. The system is designed to achieve the gold standard of 99.999% (five nines) annual uptime and was supported by data centre redundancy to ensure the availability and integrity of hospital data.
The VCCC project allowed CHW to draw from our extensive experience in developing ICT and AV systems for state- of-the-art medical facilities and demonstrated our skills in collaborating with numerous stakeholders involved in a PPP delivery model. The VCCC officially opened in June 2016. While it was extremely satisfying to see the culmination of years of hard work, CHW Consulting is particularly proud to have played an integral role on a project that will advance cancer research, treatment and prevention.
